Who has never come across comments from bench masters on social media regarding videos of techniques performed in training? Comments like: “it’s not effective in real life”, “I’d like to see it on the street”, etc. or do you receive those skeptical students who, in the first training sessions, when training with a colleague, instead of trying to learn, purposely try to contradict the techniques to demonstrate their ineffectiveness?
I cannot deny that these skeptics are right: martial arts is the search for the effectiveness of techniques in real confrontation. In other words, they’re not completely wrong, they’re just scratching the surface and don’t understand the essence of what it means to be a true martial artist.
🥋 The Shallow Critique: Bench Masters and Skeptical Students
Who has never come across comments from bench masters on social media regarding videos of techniques performed in training? Comments like: “it’s not effective in real life,” “I’d like to see it on the street,” etc. Or do you receive those skeptical students who, in the first training sessions, when training with a colleague, instead of trying to learn, purposely try to contradict the techniques to demonstrate their ineffectiveness?
You have accurately identified a persistent challenge in martial arts education: bridging the gap between the controlled training environment and the chaos of genuine confrontation.
I cannot deny that these skeptics are right: martial arts is the search for the effectiveness of techniques in real confrontation. In other words, they’re not completely wrong; they’re just scratching the surface and don’t understand the essence of what it means to be a true martial artist.
The Purpose of Controlled Practice
The mistake these critics make is failing to distinguish between Drill Practice and Live Application.
-
Drill Practice is Rote Learning: When a technique is practiced cooperatively—the Uke (receiver) being compliant—the goal is not immediate street effectiveness. The goal is to isolate and ingrain neuromuscular patterns, correct footwork, precise joint angles, and the fundamental principle of the technique. It is the equivalent of a musician practicing scales: the scale itself is not a song, but mastering it makes complex music possible.
-
Safety and Progression: In a cooperative drill, the Uke is an active participant in the Tori’s learning, allowing the technique to be applied slowly and safely. This ensures the longevity of the training partner and the gradual, injury-free development of the skill. If every practice were a «street fight,» serious injury would halt progress instantly.
Martial arts are often the subject of criticism and questions about their effectiveness in real life.
Many people doubt the applicability of the techniques and wonder whether they really work in real comparison situations.
However, it is important to understand that the effectiveness of martial arts goes beyond simply executing the techniques. It is intrinsically linked to the practitioner’s adaptability and ability to apply these techniques intelligently and appropriately to a specific context. Instead of just focusing on blind effectiveness, it is necessary to consider the intelligent adaptation of techniques to the specific context.
Understanding the “when,” “how,” and “why” of a technique is as crucial as the “if” it works. Effectiveness is the key word, yes, but it is not the only one. Adaptability is the other side of the coin. We see…
A technique is considered effective if, when applied correctly
it achieves the goal of neutralizing an opponent. However, the effectiveness of a technique is not determined solely by its execution. It is shaped by a number of factors, such as targeted training, constant repetition, and the ability to adapt technique to different combat scenarios.
Adaptability is another essential feature to consider. The ability to adapt and modify a technique to suit different situations and opponents is the true sign of mastery. In combat, circumstances are constantly changing and the experienced and competent practitioner must be able to adapt quickly.
Every combat situation is unique, and the same technique that worked brilliantly in one context may be ineffective in another. This context involves variations such as how well I know myself as a martial artist, the environment, the anatomy and intent of the attacker, the emotions involved, etc…
Understanding this context is what differentiates an expert professional from a simple bench master. Therefore, effectiveness is linked to the objective of a technique, while adaptability allows it to be adapted to circumstances. Both aspects are interconnected and must be developed together.
Effectiveness and adaptability are two sides of the same coin. To develop a truly deep understanding of martial arts, it is necessary to abandon the rigid mentality of right and wrong and understand that by training a technique hundreds of times in various training scenarios we are deepening and improving our knowledge of it, thus knowing how to make it more effective. But that’s not something you can see in a simple roller video or a simple 90 minute workout…
Therefore, when you read skeptical and derogatory comments about the effectiveness of martial arts, remember that true understanding goes beyond what can be seen in videos or specific training sessions. A true martial arts practitioner knows that there is no absolute right or wrong, but only what works or not in every combat context and not in simple training.
And, most importantly
it recognizes that even with all these nuances there is always the possibility of not being 100% effective, which is why a martial arts practitioner’s search for an effective technique is continuous and never-ending…
