The practice of martial arts as a strong ally in the education and development of the child

Discover the benefits and valuable lessons that sport can offer your little one Spending energy, without a doubt, is essential to the life of every child. One of the most effective ways to get little ones moving is physical activity, which above all guarantees a better quality of life.

There are many possibilities for practicing sports, but one of these stands out for its precious teachings that go beyond the physical part: martial arts. Its benefits also extend to the mental and psychological sphere.

Discipline, balance, physical strengthening and social skill development are some of the areas worked directly into the activity, which is even more beneficial when started in childhood.

The list of positive points of this modality is extensive and, when added to the fun and high energy expenditure that training promotes, it is certainly a good bet for the little ones. So, how about finding out more about the topic? Let’s go!

What are martial arts

Composed of physical and mental techniques, the practice aims to let the practitioner know how to defend and attack if necessary. It also refers to the «art of war», used by warriors and soldiers.

Its definition, however, is much deeper and also involves ethics, philosophy of life and a set of precepts that are taught to students. Self-knowledge, respect and self-confidence are strongly encouraged.

Is the practice violent?

Even with so many proven benefits, parents’ opinions are divided regarding the pros and cons of martial arts during childhood. The fear is that there is an incentive for violence, as happens with combat training.

Although they were created for this purpose, the practice does not currently incite violent behavior or the creation of conflict. This concept is reductionist and does not reflect reality.

The lessons work a lot on the concept of emotional control and discipline, which also includes respect for opponents, colleagues and the hierarchy and the motivation to correctly perform the movements taught.

Teachings brought to life

All the knowledge shared by the masters is valid beyond the mat, and that’s what makes martial arts so special. Everything you learn can be applied in the classroom and when interacting with family and friends.

In addition to discipline, practice during childhood emphasizes important lifelong values and benefits, such as:

Increased concentration

Children are naturally scattered and have short attention spans, but this can change dramatically with martial arts practice. Exercise constantly stimulates your brain and memory.

Fight obesity

Martial arts are a high-calorie physical activity that actively fights childhood obesity. In this way, sedentary lifestyle is avoided with techniques that also stimulate motor development.

Development of self-control

In addition to self-defense, self-control is directly linked to practice. In this way, children learn that these pillars are fundamental to success both in the movements they perform and in other areas of their lives.

Sociability

Sharing space with others and interacting with a group brings important aspects to relationships and social development. Furthermore, the relationship created with the teachers is also favorable in terms of awareness of the hierarchy.

Concentration and learning

Learning developed in practice also contributes to the importance of children in academic life. Together with concentration, positive results are perceived in personal life and, subsequently, in professional life.

Physical resistance

Intense physical exercise, breathing work, balance and muscle strengthening – all physical aspects will make your child better prepared to grow and develop properly.
