The bokken hissed!! The new one! :)

You already know that my first bokken had a tragic end. As I told you then, I intended to keep the two pieces. After all it is my first bokken (purchased from Decathlon) that helped me enter this wonderful world called kenjutsu and iaijutsu. It’s true, I promised him that as soon as I received a new bokken I would show him the old one so he would understand what was happening to him if he didn’t hiss… At that moment I felt a strong sense of austerity, I felt the need to be harsh with the new arrival, as if I wanted to scare the new bokken, he simply whistled faster.

I haven’t had time to write, but I’ve had a new book for a while. I got it from Sensei. I really liked it from the moment I held it in my hand for the first time. It seemed to fit better. It’s lighter, thinner. The handle is not bulky at all. The connection to the weapon seems different. It bends better in my palm. I was very surprised to find these things. First training with the new bokken, it was wow after wow after wow.

I’ve always heard Sensei talk about the weapon connection, the fact that the weapon must be an extension of the body. I didn’t really understand what he meant… My first bokken had a thicker handle that didn’t fit like the world in my palm and as a result I didn’t have a good grip. I never felt like it was an extension of my body. On the contrary. I felt that somewhere there was a break, that we were two separate entities…

With the new bokken, what Sensei says starts to make sense. The gun feels a little different when it fits in your hand. I can’t say I fully understood, but the sensation is definitely different. And yes, now it is obvious that it can become an extension of the body.

After the first training session with the new bokken, I was determined to carry out my plan: to go home and introduce him to the old one so he could get an idea of what could happen to him if he didn’t blow the whistle. Except… Sensei told me my new bokken is from Japan and… he is older than me. That is, still be around 50 years old. This got me thinking…. It moved me. Therefore, I hold in my hand a piece of wood worked half a century ago.

I was so impressed that I no longer thought it appropriate to threaten him in any way. He doesn’t want to whistle, he doesn’t whistle. I also put it in the place of honor in the room and banned Sony from touching it (not that he listens to me, but still… 🙂 ). I still have some and I greet him both when he comes and when he goes out.

Still studying and admiring it, I decided to give it a name. That’s what my bokken is called Yuuki. Don’t ask me why… that’s just the first word that came to mind. This is what inspired this bokken.

Obviously I trained at home with him. A brief parenthesis. For almost a year now, Sony has ignored me when I train with weapons on camera. He has gotten used to me and them and usually sleeps when I train. I close the parenthesis. Well, that’s what it was doing a few days ago while I was running the subs (hollow cut) since dawn. The TV also worked. At a certain point the bokken hissed. It hummed loudly, pressing, drowning out the sound of the television. I might have thought it seemed like it to me or that I dreamed it, if Sony hadn’t rushed like a fire to stare with a watchful eye, here comes the bokken. He considered him an intruder who needed to be «scrutinized» carefully to understand his intentions. The reaction is understandable since it is the first time he has heard the hiss of a bokken. 🙂 For the next two days he looked at me suspiciously every time I put my hands on the bokken. Then he calmed down. Naturally the bokken stopped whistling. I’m panting a little because I can’t understand what I did in that moment to be able to repeat the feat. But he blew the whistle, so he can! 🙂
