1st JKA SC Course with Kazuo Nagamine. Last Saturday, April 22, 2023, the Jucílio Fernandes Gymnasium in the city of Itajaí, Santa Catarina, welcomed one of the most renowned shotokan karate masters in the country: Kazuo Nagamine, Technical Director of the JKA Brasil Karate Shotokan.
Nagamine held the 1st JKA SC course in collaboration with the organization of the LCK – Liga Catarinense de Karate, an in-depth study on kihon and kata techniques, which brought together practitioners from different cities in the region and Paraná.

Students of all ages and experience levels, from beginners to seniors, participated in the event. Nagamine led the course with great dedication and attention to detail, explaining in depth every movement, position and technique of the kihon and kata.
During the course, Sensei emphasized the importance of kihon, which consists of the basic movements of karate, and its direct relationship with kata, which are sequences of movements that simulate an imaginary fight. Nagamine emphasized that the kihon is fundamental to the correct execution of the kata, as it is where the basic techniques of striking, defense and movement are learned, which are the basis of all karate.
Furthermore, Sensei addressed various technical and philosophical aspects of karate, such as the importance of correct posture, breathing and emotional balance. He also emphasized the importance of consistent and disciplined practice to achieve excellence in karate.
The course participants were impressed by the quality of the lessons held by master Nagamine, who demonstrated not only great technical knowledge, but also great passion and dedication for karate. For many, the course was a unique opportunity to learn from one of the country’s greatest shotokan karate masters.
At the end of the event, participants were able to take photos with Nagamine sensei and received course completion certificates.

Mastering the Fundamentals: Nagamine Sensei’s Intensive Karate Course
The intensive karate course, led by the esteemed Nagamine Sensei, drew students of all ages and experience levels, from enthusiastic beginners to seasoned seniors. The diverse attendance underscored the universal appeal of dedicated martial arts training and the community’s hunger for high-level instruction. Nagamine Sensei led the course with great dedication and meticulous attention to detail, thoroughly explaining every movement, position, and technique (Kihon and Kata).
The atmosphere was one of intense focus and respect, where every correction offered by the Sensei was treated as a vital lesson. Participants spent significant time drilling foundational techniques, emphasizing proper hip rotation, stability in deep stances, and the explosive snap (kime) required for effective strikes and blocks. The Sensei moved tirelessly among the students, offering personalized feedback and hands-on adjustments, ensuring that even the smallest misalignment was corrected for long-term technical integrity.
The Interdependence of Kihon and Kata
During the course, Sensei Nagamine strongly emphasized the importance of Kihon, which consists of the basic movements of karate, and its direct, indispensable relationship with Kata—the structured sequences of movements that simulate an imaginary fight. Nagamine stressed that Kihon is fundamental to the correct execution of the Kata, as it is where the basic techniques of striking, defense, and movement are learned.
He articulated that true mastery of Kata is impossible without flawless Kihon. The Kata provides the strategic context and flow, but the power, precision, and stability of every single motion within that sequence are derived entirely from the basic training. He used examples to illustrate how a weak stance (poor Kihon) leads to a slow, unbalanced block in Kata, thereby compromising the entire defensive strategy. Ultimately, the Sensei’s teaching reinforced the idea that karate is a progressive discipline: the diligent, repetitive practice of the basics is not merely a preliminary stage, but the lifelong wellspring of all advanced skill. This deep dive into the fundamentals served as a powerful reminder to all students that complex techniques are only as strong as their simplest components.
Conclusion
The 1st JKA SC Course with Kazuo Nagamine, held on April 22, 2023, in Itajaí, Santa Catarina, represents a landmark event for Shotokan Karate practitioners in Brazil. As the Technical Director of JKA Brasil Karate Shotokan, Nagamine brought unparalleled expertise and knowledge to the course, offering an in-depth study of kihon (fundamental techniques) and kata (prearranged forms). His presence elevated the event, allowing students from various cities in Santa Catarina and Paraná to learn directly from one of the country’s most respected masters.
This course emphasized the importance of mastering the fundamentals as the foundation of karate practice. Kihon drills help practitioners develop proper posture, timing, and precision, while kata training fosters discipline, focus, and an understanding of the strategic application of techniques. Under Nagamine’s guidance, participants were able to refine their movements, correct subtle errors, and deepen their comprehension of Shotokan principles, reinforcing the connection between technical skill and mental focus.
Beyond technical instruction, the event highlighted the community aspect of martial arts. Bringing together practitioners from different regions fostered camaraderie, mutual respect, and shared learning. Students were not only able to enhance their physical skills but also engage in the exchange of experiences and perspectives, strengthening the regional karate network and inspiring continued dedication to practice.
In conclusion, the 1st JKA SC Course with Kazuo Nagamine was more than a training session; it was a transformative experience for all participants.
