In the world of Japanese martial arts, Ikken Hissatsu (One punch kills) literally means: “Kill with a single shot”. Although the word «killing» it is symbolic here, it expresses the idea of neutralize the opponent with a single decisive movement – not for brutality, but for absolute control of distance, time and body energy.
This central concept in many traditional styles takes on particular depth in practice Shorinjiryu a you Shishi-ryucombining martial strategy and true battlefield awareness.
- Full activity: source of energy
En Shorinjiryu, the notion of full swing – O «Tai no Shinshuku» (the contraction/extension of the body) – is fundamental. A shot must not only come from the arm: it must start from a chain that starts from the anchors, from the hips, pass through the trunk, and explode through the appendicular limb.
- Distance: “Reach” and pace control
The distance (or sharp) is another key to the realistic application of this principle. A decisive blow is useless if it fails to hit the target. This is why Shorinjiryu and Shishi-ryu practitioners learn to do this extend their reach (achieve) thanks to:
- a smooth step or a quick movement,
- a complete extension that aligns the structures,
- The mind when faced with different opponents
Ikken Hissatsu isn’t just about dueling. In a broader context, as taught in Shishi-ryu and some forms of Bunkai Shorinjiryu – this principle becomes a philosophy of management of “chaos”. Each keystroke must be:
- economic (a single hit to an opponent),
- decisive (without half measures),
- positional (the body must remain mobile, ready to turn or move to a new angle).
This logic is crucial against several opponents : We cannot afford to waste time or energy. Every attack must free up space, breaks the opponent’s rhythmand allows remain master of the triangle (the combat zone around you).
Ikken Hissatsu is not just a fantasy. It is a martial quest: that of perfect shot, sincere, rightwhich depends neither on anger nor brute force, but on a unified body, a clear mind and a coherent strategy.
In Shorinjiryu and Shishi-ryu this idea manifests itself through constant training in precision, power by tensing/relaxing the muscles at the right time and in the ability to react in full awareness in all directions.
A lifetime of practice!
