Once upon a time there was a little boy named Eli who dreamed of deciding everything.
“If I were king,” he said, “I would choose when to play, when to eat, and no one would tell me what to do!” »
One day, in an old chest, Eli found a golden crown. His eyes were shining.
«Behold, now I am king!» » he said, putting it on his head.
But the crown immediately slipped onto his shoulders. It was really too big.
Eli tried again and again, but nothing worked.
Then the old village owl, witnessing the scene, slowly approached:
— «You think that being king is just deciding. But this crown carries with it an invisible burden: that of watching over others, protecting them and showing them the right path.»
Live protest:
— “But I just want to choose!” »
The owl shook his head:
— «When you become a king… or a professor… or a parent, it’s not to have more freedom. It’s to have more responsibility. The decisions you make are not just for you, but for everyone who counts on you.»
Eli looked at the crown, a little intimidated.
— “So… I’m not ready yet?” »
The owl smiles:
– “Not yet. But every time you help, listen or care for someone, you become a little bigger. One day the crown will sit on your head and you will be ready to lead others. »
Eli gently placed the crown back into his chest.
All right, he thought. For now, I’ll learn to worry before I learn to order. »
And the crown waited, patiently, for the child to grow not only in size, but above all in heart and responsibilities.
The meaning of this story
The crown represents the role of someone who leads others: a king, but also a teacher or parent. Many children (and sometimes even adults!) believe that leadership just means having the power to decide. In reality, this “crown” is heavy, because it requires taking on responsibilities: watching over others, making good decisions, protecting and setting an example.
The allegory reminds us that growing up does not only mean acquiring freedom, but also learning to be responsible. It is only by developing listening skills, patience and attention to others that the crown becomes our measure.
