The story of the 3 little pigs has been known to everyone for a long time! But this story is also full of wisdom and illustrates well the way we see things in the practice of Karate.
First we have 1AND little pig building his house with straw. He builds it “quickly”, preferring to do the minimum, to have more time for fun later. The big bad wolf therefore had no difficulty in tearing down the house, because it was not solid. In fact it collapses at the first light wind.
The second pig worked harder, building his wooden house. But he is not yet strong enough to resist the breath of the big bad wolf.
The last little pig, meanwhile, has meticulously built his house. He used brick and took all the time and effort necessary to complete his project. Suddenly the wolf hit a wall and despite screaming he couldn’t knock the house down because it was very sturdy.
In my teachings I regularly see karateka who try to go too fast, who don’t apply themselves, who don’t pay the necessary attention to solidify their foundation in Karate practice. As in the allegory, they will soon find themselves facing difficulties, having not built the foundations on which the very essence of karate rests solidly enough.
In exchange I recommend an approach that lasts over time, which allows you to analyse, apply yourself and put your whole heart into it. This makes it possible to build, like 3And little pig, a Karate that will be solid. Although slower at first, this approach will allow for faster progress once the cement of the techniques is well anchored.
We can draw a more personal lesson from the story of the 3 little pigs and illustrate the importance of applying ourselves to be able to defend ourselves when the big bad wolf comes to face us.
With respect, Budo,
Larry Foisy
