REIHŌ (礼法) – METHODS OF GREETING

One of the first lessons learned by karateka, generally during the first lesson, is 1st Kyokun Martial:

« Karatedo wa rei ni hajimari rei ni owaru » translated as “karatedo begins and ends with respect/courtesy”.

Full greeting upon entering the dojo
Kimashita Onegaishimasu

Greetings at the beginning of the term
Seiretsu (instructs to line up) in the Musubi Dachi (heels together) position
Seiza (sitting on your knees with correct posture)
Mokuso (Meditation, finding your center)

When the instructor claps his hands or says “Mokuso Yame”:

We look towards the Shomen and the Ktonsils and we wait for the signal: “ Shomen ni rei.» So let’s say hello for 3 seconds.

THE Sampai names the title of the instructors and gives the sinal: «Hanshi», «Kyoshi», «Shihan», «Renshi», «Sensei ni rei». So let’s say hello for 3 seconds.

We wait for the signal to greet all practitioners: “ Autogaï ni rei ». So let’s say hello for 3 seconds.
