Why is it dangerous to consume sugar? Many of us ask ourselves this question very often, as we like to taste a small square of chocolate. But how many of us stop at just one square? Understand that when we talk about excess sugar we don’t necessarily mean weight gain. Sugar is much more harmful to health than to the figure. We mean sugars, which abound in cakes, pastries, candies, juices and other products. But let’s see what the risks of sugar consumption are. Are you ready?
Already in 1957, Professor John Yudkin, a nutrition expert at Queen Elizabeth College (in London), raised the alarm and stated that sugar it is the main culprit of heart disease and other chronic conditions.

Sugar consumption leads to tooth decay
The link between sugar and tooth decay has been studied since 1967, when experts called it the «greatest enemy» of teeth. Tooth decay occurs when bacteria on the teeth consume sugars, acid forms, and destroys tooth enamel. The latest studies have shown that the most harmful to the teeth are acidic sweets, but also other foods rich in starch.

Sugar consumption leads to weight gain
A study carried out in 2004 showed that if we consume just 1 serving of juice per day, we can add about 7 kilograms in a year. Sweets are rich in calories, but they don’t make you hungry. Therefore, it wreaks havoc on the scale, especially if you have a sedentary lifestyle.
Sugar consumption increases insulin levels
If you eat sweet products very often, this can trigger an increase in the body’s need for insulin, the hormone that converts food into energy. When insulin levels are high, the body becomes less sensitive to it. Glucose accumulates in the blood and tiredness and the desire to eat as often as possible appear.
Sugar consumption affects the heart
The heart is the central organ that can be most affected by the sweets we consume. Diabetes and being overweight are risk factors for heart disease. According to a study conducted in 2014, the risk of cardiovascular disease is directly proportional to the sugar added to our diet. Respondents who ate up to 20% of their daily calories from sugary sources were 38% more likely to die from heart disease than those who limited their calorie intake from sweets to 8% of the total.
