Impressions after the traditional martial arts orientation seminar (10.18.2024)

I wish I had had the opportunity for a workshop like this when I was little. It would be a surprising opening, a wide-open window into a universe I had only read about in books. Maybe it’s hard to understand, but some of us didn’t have such privileges, we didn’t have a path already trod by others. Information, seminars did not «fly» around like that. 🙂 Of course it’s not too late either. It’s never too late to learn. I was very happy when I learned of his intentions Sensei Cristian Laiber to organize this practical workshop.

I recovered Raiden Dojofull of momentum, with all of Hollywood in my head. I was firmly convinced that if I approached Ninjutsu I would first of all learn to use the nunchuck correctly, to run on boards placed on the surface of the water (as far as swimming is concerned I know how to swim a little like this… somehow), to throw stars, to use You know (from which I knew them Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), climb trees easily, do the flick flack (before long I realized I couldn’t even do the lower deck anymore… so no chance for anything else)…. And no, contrary to all appearances, I didn’t come to the Raiden Dojo as a child, but as a newly mature adult. 🙂 Of course, all these wishes/dreams have been put aside so that I can learn to sit in line (yes, you guessed it, I’m still learning 🙂).

Impressions after the traditional martial arts orientation seminar (10.18.2024)

I remember that about 2-3 months after I started practicing ninjutsu, Sensei calmly told us this ninjas weren’t even considered good fighterswhere did you put that, he added that too they were good at chemistry, physics (issues I was always at war with). His words were, for me, like a punch in the plexus received without any grimace on the face, but which made me doubt with pain. I went home and «chewed» them for about a week. I’ve been dealing with ninjas since I was little, and now… you know how it is… you’re dealing with ninjas, you’re dealing with mom, dad, and the whole nation, so we’re on the brink of war. 🙂 Then I thought about it… I’m not a good fighter either, so maybe I have a chance of becoming a ninja. BUT… I still don’t like physics or chemistry… Would there have been writers, poets, ninja artists? Something, nothing?! 🙂

I later found out that the nunchacku and sai are from Okinawa and are not specific ninja weapons (my childhood was a lie… 🙂 my favorites of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Raphaelthe one with the red bandana and the sai, and Michelangelo the one with the orange bandana and nunchuck were out of tradition).

Another small shock was discovering that there were no ninja costumes, they dressed up when necessary or wore normal clothes just to avoid attracting attention. Little by little all my Hollywood myths were dispelled.

It wasn’t easier with the samurai either. My romantic idea of friendship, loyalty and honor (an ostrich-camel in the middle The Bushido Code known from his films and novels Alexander Dumas) became one with the earth like a sandcastle carried away by a wave.

I believe that the Japanese, in their recognized wisdom, allowed and strengthened such myths and legends and then transformed them into a sort of proof. There aren’t many who can break away from Hollywood ideas. If you’re looking for sparkle on TV, chances are you won’t find it. On the other hand, this standing in line and the alignment of the body are not easy things. But if you are patient and give yourself time, you have every chance of (re)discovering yourself.

Friday evening Sensei Cristian Laiber he patiently explained to us where certain movements in martial arts came from, why the Japanese moved in a certain way, he made extremely interesting analogies between freehand fighting and fighting with weapons.

The moment you start digging a little deeper into things, the perspective changes dramatically. Because by starting to know yourself better, you know that you can apply the same principles preserved and adapted for many centuries in everyday life.

It’s not easy to find your own path… The fact that Sensei was willing to help us understand which style, which discipline was suitable for us, seemed to me to be an extremely elegant gesture. Ninjutsu, Aikijutsu and Kenjutsu/Iaijutsu they have very different cadences and dynamics, even if they have common elements. At least that’s how I feel about them. And it’s a big deal to have someone introducing you to these Martial Arts at your door.

One of the things I learned Raiden Dojo And try not to waste time looking for obstacles, there may not be any. Their minds create it.

So I can only thank Sensei for this seminar! I hope there will be more!
